There was a time in the 20th century when just about everybody had a record player, but relatively few people sported tattoos.

In modern times, it's tattoos that are trendy and soon it will be easier to get your body inked on Martha's Vineyard than to purchase a new album over the counter.

Aboveground Records owner Michael Barnes, during the last day of business at his Edgartown Triangle shop Saturday, said the next tenant for his retail space will be Mark Fuentes of Martha's Vineyard Tattoo, which has been based on Circuit Avenue in Oak Bluffs.

The tattoo shop likely will be open in a couple of months, Barnes said.

How very sad to see you go, Michael. Aboveground was always a spirit lifter because of you. This is a great loss to the community. Sign of the times, I guess, but not one that feels very good to this baby boomer. Wishing you all the best in whatever you decide to do next. Thanks for all your years of making great music available to the island.

I see nothing wrong. Better than another tee shirt shop.
