Woods Hole Innkeeper's 'Boathouse' Plan for Leeside Sparks Comments

The old Leeside is soon to be reborn as Quicks Hole Boathouse, a year-round tavern and restaurant overlooking the Steamship Authority terminal in Woods Hole. But some people on Facebook don't like the new owner's proposed name for the old place.

The old Leeside restaurant and bar overlooking the Steamship Authority terminal in Woods Hole is soon to be reborn as the latest local brand from Beth Colt of the Woods Hole Inn and seasonal Quick's Hole Taqueria.

"Exciting news! We are working on getting open with the tavern at 29 Railroad Avenue in Woods Hole. We should be open within a few weeks!!" Colt announced on the Quick's Hole Facebook page Friday.

While Quicks Hole Taqueria will return in spring to serve its lobster tacos and other waterfront fare, "Quicks Hole Boathouse (next door) will be open year round with a tavern and kitchen plus its own delicious menu," Colt told the taqueria's Facebook fans.

Colt's choice of a name for the former Leeside, where generations of Island travelers have awaited and often missed their ferries while drinking and/or dining, has sparked a mini-controversy among Facebookers who say it has unwanted connotations. Here are some of their responses to Colt's announcement:

  • "The name "boat house" has a bad rap in this town... Just my 2 cents"
  • "The boat house isn't something you want to be associated with, even if only in name"Like · Reply · 6 · November 9 at 8:58am
  • "Wouldn't railhouse or something like that be a cooler name since there already is a boathouse or two?"
  • "People will start calling it just the Boathouse.. .not something you want to get confused with the Falmouth one."
  • "I agree..bad rep is not a good way to start"
  • Couldn't agree more on the name, most locals will say the same. The boat house is already taken as a name, and you either leave there part of a gang, with a gang following you, or guns drawn. It's not very woods hole... And, it is impossible for boats to pull up to that place... Boat house it is not"
  • "How about QH at The Leeside"
But some who responded to Colt's post were just happy to hear they'll soon be able to get chef Stephanie Mikolayzk's cuisine year-round:
  • "this is GREAT news!! I need some place to go while I wait for the boat after college classes!! Already missing Quicks Hole!!"
  • "Hurry, I'm hungry"
The hospitable Colt had this to say in return:

  • "Thanks for all the nice comments and shares. We appreciate your feedback -- now back to scrubbing floors to get ready for your arrival:)"
