Learn Guitar with James Taylor

On Facebook and YouTube, the star singer-songwriter with Island roots shares his guitar technique in a series of free lessons. Here's "Carolina in My Mind," chord by chord.

Especially on Martha's Vineyard, where his family began living seasonally in the early 1950s, James Taylor's voice and songs are so well-known that we may forget he's also an accomplished guitarist.

He's also a generous one: On his Facebook page and YouTube channel, Taylor is offering a series of free guitar lessons in which he breaks down some of his most famous songs chord by chord, then plays them through.

Find Taylor's video channel at youtube.com/user/jamestaylorvideo and like his Facebook page at facebook.com/JamesTaylor for updates when he posts a new guitar lesson.

I'll start: James Taylor live, solo, in a field up-Island, doing some kind of benefit in 1971 was the first concert I went to without my parents. My friends and I sat right in front of the sound truck and mobbed him when he came off. He was very nice to us, just a bunch of little girls whose parents and big sisters had bought his records and tapes. Of course we all grew up to buy his later albums ourselves. For some of us, it must be confessed, JT was the gateway to soul and blues.

It is very generous of him to share this intimate detail. Very few guitar players, especially those at his skill level, would ever share this kind of thing.
