“Expedition Whydah” Lecture by Barry Clifford

In 1984, Cape Cod native Barry Clifford discovered the only fully verified pirate shipwreck, the Whydah, off the coast of Wellfleet.

First launched in 1715, the ship was originally used in the Atlantic Slave Trade. In February 1717, pirates attacked and took over the ship led by “Black Sam” Bellamy. Later that year while Bellamy was on his way to visit his mistress near Cape Cod, the ship wrecked on a sandbar in a violent storm.

Clifford will describe the discovery of the wreck and his exploration work since.
