Winter Walk

Saturday Art Adventure

From Pole to Pole for children ages three to eight with Lani Carney meets from 9 am to noon on Saturday at in Oak Bluffs. Cost is $45. For more information, call 508-693-1850 or visit featherstoneart.org.

 

Saturday Squirrels

Saturday Squirrels will be cooking venison stew, playing games and doing crafts in and around the Tipi on Saturday from 10 am – 4 pm. Boys and girls age 6-13 are welcome and should bring a vegetable or root for the stew as well as their own lunch. Children should dress warm with gloves, woolies and hats. Cost is $900 for the entire school year (30 Saturdays), $325 for 10 sessions or $50 per day. For more information and to register, call 508-645-2008.

FLY Yoga School Preview

The Preview is from 2 to 3:30 p.m. at Tapas Hot Yoga on Saturday. The 60 minute yoga class will be donation-based and followed by a Q&A session about the 2012 FLY Yoga School that starts in April. All donations will go towards student scholarships. For more information, call 774-238-0176.

 

Old Fashioned Musicale

There will be an at the in Oak Bluffs (across the street from ) on Saturday. This musical jam will be multi generational and feature all kinds of music. You do not need to be a musician to come! All are welcome to come and just sit and enjoy our incredible Island musicians. The list of players keeps growing and currently includes: Deb, Katie, and Jack Mayhew, Mark Mazer, Peter Huntington, Liz Bradley, Tom Hodgson, Nancy Jephcote, Brian Weiland (and family) Tristan Israel, Michael West, Dan Waters, Willy Mason and Nina Violet and their "band." More surprises await! Doors open at 6:30 pm and music will begins by 7:00; a $5 donation is requested.

 

LE HAVRE

The MV Film Society screens the film: Saturday at 7:30 p.m. at the in Vineyard Haven. Winner of the Fipresci Prize at the 2011 Cannes Film Festival, Le Havre takes place in the the French harbor city that gives the film its name. Fate throws young African refugee Idrissa (Blondin Miguel) into the path of Marcel Marx (André Wilms), a well-spoken bohemian who works as a shoe shiner. With innate optimism and the unwavering support of his community, Marcel stands up to officials doggedly pursuing the boy for deportation. A political fairy tale that exists somewhere between the reality of contemporary France and the classic cinema of Jean-Pierre Melville and Marcel Carné, Le Havre is a charming, deadpan delight. Opera on Sundays

Opera on Sundays returns to the in Vineyard Haven on Sunday with Verdi's "Nabucco" at 1 pm. "Nabucco" is a story of Nebuchadnezzar II who destroyed the temple in Jerusalem and put the Hebrews into captivity in Babylon. This is Opera at its grandest as 400 take to the stage at one of Europe's most popular open-air summer Opera Festivals (over 200,000 attend each year).  Admission: $15 Adults, $12 Seniors/Students. Understanding the Occupy Movement

-- An Educational Forum: Faces, Facts and Future takes place on Sunday at the in Vineyard Haven. The program consists of short video clips and informal discussions to follow from 2:30 pm - 4:30 pm and will be followed by a Community supper at 5pm

Animal Skins at Sassafras

There is a new workshop on Animal Skins at on Sunday from 1 pm – 4 pm in the Tipi. Gain experience in skinning animals and how to make skins useful. Participants will skin some smaller (road killed) animals, work on skins in different stages, clean and scrape deerskins and begin the tanning process. This workshop is geared towards adults and youth that can handle knives responsibly. Younger children are welcome to join and need to be accompanied by an adult. Dress in warm, outdoor clothing that can get dirty including gloves. Bring a good knife if you have one and a snack for your children. Sassafras will provide hot tea. $25 per person; $35 per parent and child; $40 max per family. For more information, call 508-645-2008.

Martin Luther King, Jr. Breakfast Day of Service

Come to The on Monday to honor Martin Luther King, Jr. with a day of service. Participate in community chores and breakfast! Chores start promptly at 9 am rain or shine followed by farm sausage & eggs then a tour! Call 627-7007 x101 to sign up.

The will be holding a Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. breakfast and program at 9 am in the Parish House on William Street on Monday. Program topic is "A life of altruistic service, his inheritance, and our commitment." A free will offering will be taken. For more information, call 508-693-1539.

 

Knit-Along Mondays

Knit-along Mondays begins today at 2 pm upstairs at the in Vineyard Haven. Bring a project already in the progress, a new one to start, or needles and yarn for a basic, beginning knitting lesson. If you're confounded by instructions, have reached an impasse with sewing up, or want to practice a new technique the “knitting doctor” will be in the house to help! $5 donation requested for those who need a lesson, please.
