Wayback Wednesday: Betty Carter at the Oak Bluffs Tabernacle, 19??

Were you at the Tabernacle for this outstanding concert by one of the greatest voices in jazz? Do you remember the year? Tell us in the comments.

The Tabernacle in Oak Bluffs has seen some roof-raising jazz and singing over the years, but this concert by the phenomenal vocalist, songwriter and bandleader Betty Carter (1929-1998) remains a high-water mark.

Your Patch editor, who in her former life as a radio personality and music business executive attended concerts by nearly all the foremost jazz bands who were playing in the last quarter of the 20th century, was just a teenager at this show but still remembers Betty Carter singing, scatting, and forcefully leading her trio on the Tabernacle stage.

Take a look at the ticket price on this poster: $6.50 a seat, compared to $35 for Wynton Marsalis and the Jazz at Lincoln Center Orchestra in 2013 — another great show and well worth the cost, if their kids' concert the day before was any indication.
