Velopalooza: Velomobiles Ride Martha's Vineyard

Ride with the fastest human-powered vehicles on Martha's Vineyard as they tour the Island in these photographs from last weekend's annual velomobile gathering.

Rain didn't hold back the speediest motorless riders on Martha's Vineyard, as eight velomobiles and an electric-assisted recumbent tricycle toured the Island June 29 and June 30.

The annual Martha's Vineyard velomobile gathering was organized by Island velomobiler David Whitmon, who kindly shared photos with MV Patch.

The weekend was "a great success," Whitmon said, with "lots of climbing and lots of high speed descents," with 52 miles pedaled Saturday.

Sunday, the velomobilers rode another 50 miles on a flatter course that included a trip to Chappaquiddick on the On Time II ferry, whose owner Peter Wells hosted and photographed the riders, Whitmon said.

Four video cameras were also running during the weekend, Whitmon added, promising to let us know when the final reel is ready to view.

Did you see the velomobiles last weekend, or in the Edgartown Fourth of July parade? Have you ever ridden one? Tell us in the comments.
