Tiny Chappy Ferry Makes Two-Hour Trip

Did you see the Chappy ferry in open water Sunday afternoon, on its way from Edgartown to Vineyard Haven for a maintenance haul? In a week or 10 days, we'll have another chance to see On Time III make the return trip.

On Time III is scheduled to come out of the water every other year for inspection and maintenance.

Sunday afternoon, the larger of the two Chappaquiddick ferries made what Captain George Fisher said was an approximately two-hour trip from Edgartown to Vineyard Haven, where it's set to be hauled Monday at Packer's.

MV Patch chased the On Time III from State Beach to Tisbury Wharf: See our video for a quick glimpse of the ferry's voyage.

For the next week to 10 days, Chappaquiddick travelers will have one ferry in operation and could face waits of up to three times normal, co-owner Peter Wells advised on Facebook.

This is the second try at On Time III's biennial maintenance: The ferry was hauled briefly after Labor Day, then put back into service when vehicle lines backed up in Edgartown.
