Slow Food Fosters Fast Friendships with Farmers

A packed crowd attend the Slow Food potluck Thursday evening, where participants had a chance to meet and greet with local farmers.

The event may have been billed as a "slow food" potluck, but the goal of the Thursday evening get-together at the in West Tisbury was to foster fast friendship between the community and farmers.

The event was sponsored by Slow Food Martha's Vineyard, a local chapter of an international movement that celebrates real food and advocates for sustainable, local food production.

Eleven farmers from throughout the Island spent the evening introducing themselves to attendees one table at a time and answering questions about their offerings.

"This dinner was really to bring Island farmers to community tables, so people can know: Where are these farms located, how can I get there, how can I get products that they have, what do they have in season?" said Roxanne Kapitan, who organized the potluck.

Attendees were treated to a special announcement: Slow Food International founder and president Carlo Petrini will travel to Martha's Vineyard to speak at Slow Food MV's annual summer potluck in August.
