Shark Comes Ashore on Menemsha Beach

A photo gallery from social media showing the dead shark found on Menemsha Beach Sunday.

A small crowd of spectators snapped photographs of a dead basking shark that washed ashore on Menemsha Beach Sunday afternoon, reports the Vineyard Gazette.

At least one eyewitness posted that the shark was initially still alive (see above).

The species of the shark was not confirmed, but it was believed to be a basking shark, a member of the world's second-most-numerous fish species, the Gazette reports.
