Raising Funds to Raise up Youth

Brotherhood/SisterSol return to the Vineyard for the second to host a benefit for programs focused on youth development.

It was more than 10 years ago when Jason Warwin and Khary Lazarre-White recognized while at Brown University the benefits of establishing a supportive community to help overcome obstacles and challenges for youth. They set up camp in Harlem to establish a supportive program for black and Latino youth, now known as Brotherhood/SisterSol.

Last year, the group took its cause to Martha’s Vineyard for the first time. On August 15, they’ll do so again.

Brotherhood/Sister Sol’s mission is to reach out to youth populations across the nation facing miseducation, in hopes to create a more positive future, said development and communications coordinator Ariana Aguilar. Their mission is a noble one, and their work has drawn praise—including from the mighty Oprah Winfrey.

"[The Brotherhood/Sister Sol] is using their passion to uplift and inspire a next generation through extraordinary work that creates leaders and a sanctuary for children . . .where their members can develop a higher vision of themselves,” Aguilar quotes Winfrey as saying.

On Monday, from 6 to 8 p.m. Brotherhood/Sister Sol will host a at to raise money for programs focused on youth development in the name of that mission.

“Right now we are doing a lot of training for youth educators throughout the nation,” Aguilar said. “It’s not just about mentoring or providing an after-school program, but getting at the root causes with things in their lives and help them work through their emotions.”

The fundraiser will feature an open bar with hors d’oeuvres and a silent auction. Tickets start at $100, and can be purchased here

“We have a lot of artwork, live with Regis and Kelly VIP tickets . . . and some sport paraphernalia,” Aguilar said.

Other silent auction items include jewelry, tickets to plays in New York and items from numerous Island businesses.

“We love the community out there,” Aguilar said. “You can have a great time, and 100 percent of the money goes to help this great cause."
