Memorial Day Weekend: Gardening Events

From plant sales and a free festival to garden book talks, the weekend brings a host of options for gardening aficionados.

Summer may not officially begin till June 21, but the flowers and trees tell us otherwise. This weekend, the unofficial start of the high season on Martha’s Vineyard, brings no shortage of plant and gardening options.

  • Polly Hill Festival The Polly Hill Arboretum will host Spring into Summer: A Celebration of Plants, in honor of the opening of its visitor center, on Saturday, May 28. Stop by between 10 a.m. and 2 p.m. for a plant sale, garden talks, tours, nature walks, seed planting for kids, a tree raffle and food from the ArtCliff Diner truck. All events are free. 

  • Polly Hill Author Talk Later that day the arboretum and the Martha’s Vineyard Garden Club will present an with Andrea Wulf on her book “Founding Gardeners: The Revolutionary Generation, Nature, and the Shaping of the American Nation.” The talk takes place at 4 p.m. at the arboretum, and costs $10. A book signing will follow.

  • Plant Sale, with Lobster Rolls The Chilmark Community Church will host a plant sale on Saturday, May 28 from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. Take your pick of herbs, vegetables and perennial or annual flowers—or forget the plants altogether and just treat yourself to a lobster roll.

  • Container Gardens Workshop Vineyard Gardens continues its free weekly series on Saturday, May 28 at 11 p.m. This week’s topic: Container gardens, how to plant and organize window boxes and deck planters. Participants will receive a coupon for the nursery, good toward a purchase that day.

  • Garden Club Benefit Sale The Martha’s Vineyard Garden Club will host a plant sale on Saturday, May 28 and Sunday, May 29 from 10 a.m to 2 p.m. at its Old Mill headquarters in West Tisbury.

  • COMSOG Sale The Community Solar Greenhouse continues its annual  at its New York Avenue, Oak Bluffs headquarters, daily through Sunday from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m.
