Accomplishment: Eli Hanschka of Vineyard Haven won first place in the Falmouth Academy Middle School Science Fair for a project that studied how the addition of weight affects the flight of a boomerang. Eli said he learned that the more weight he added, the farther the boomerang traveled. “I think the fact that it involved complicated physics impressed the judges,” said Eli, and helped to gain him that first-place prize.

Key to Awesomeness: The Falmouth Academy Science Fair is a very important part of the year, so every student puts a good amount of time into his or her project. “I was really surprised at first; I wasn’t really expecting it,” said Eli in regards to winning first place. Eli said he learned a lot from books that school librarians helped him to find, and that he spent more time than he expected gathering information, both from books and the internet. Winning meant accolades, a certificate and cash prize—which Eli’s already spent on a skateboard.
