Martha's Vineyard Fishermen Named Red Cross Heroes

This April, the American Red Cross Cape Cod and Islands Chapter will recognize and honor the bravery of Martha's Vineyard residents Caleb Nicholson, Neal Farrell and John Thomas "JT" Maher at the Annual Heroes Breakfast.

The American Red Cross of Eastern Massachusetts writes:

It had started like any other day on the water. It was September 2012, and Caleb Nicholson, Neal Farrell and John Thomas “JT” Maher were fishing on the waters of Aquinnah. They were about to pack it in for the day but decided on one more cast.

It was that last-ditch effort that led them to three men clinging to a cooler in the choppy waters. The anchor line had sucked their 20-foot boat underwater, and the three men screamed for their lives as they tried to stay afloat.

Nicholson, Farrell and Maher didn’t hesitate – quickly throwing them lines and flotation devices to bring the men aboard to safety.

“These three men didn’t hesitate to help those in need, despite the dangerous conditions they faced themselves,” said Hilary Greene, Executive Director for the Cape Cod and Islands Chapter of the American Red Cross. “This act of selflessness is a perfect example of the Red Cross mission – helping people when they need it most.”

The Cape Cod & Islands Heroes Breakfast, which will be held on April 4th, 2013 is the only event of its kind: It recognizes heroes throughout our community who perform extraordinary acts of courage by saving someone’s life, helping in the rescue of someone in need, or who has committed countless hours of service to an organization or community.

No other event highlights ordinary citizens doing extraordinary things- regardless of the organization or community they serve- and informs us of these amazing people who make this such a special place to live.

This event, which has sold out almost every year, has more than 500 people in attendance and receives enormous media coverage due to its special nature.
