Here All Year: Will Luckey

Highlighting Islanders living and working on Martha's Vineyard all year long

As the pinkletinks begin their chant of spring and our migratory bird friends return to wake us up with song, nature's music again descends upon our Island. And yet there's been someone here making music all through the long winter. Meet Will Luckey, Island born and bred.

Though he spent many of his younger years touring on the road with sensational artists such as Cat Stevens, Todd Rundgren and Richie Havens, Luckey spent his formative years here on the Island and returned once his rambling days were done, in 1980. With a degree from Berklee College of Music, as well as a strong background in rock and jazz music, Luckey has been teaching music on the Island he calls home for 30 years now, and counting.

Operating out of his state-of-the-art multitrack studio in West Tisbury, Luckey offers lessons to any willing musician ages 12 to 75 who are interested in training their vocal ability, or honing their skills with piano, guitar and bass. And though he gives classes from morning til night, Will Luckey took some time from his busy teaching schedule to chat with Patch about what it's like to work here all year long.

Luckey: I grew up on the Island and attended both the West Tisbury school and the Vineyard Haven school. I played music across America until 1980 when I retuned to live here and have been here ever since.
