Divas Uncorked: A Wine Club Gone Viral

The fifth annual Divas Uncorked Wine and Food festival kicks off Thursday with numerous events scheduled over the weekend.

What started out as a small wine club with women sharing conversations over a bottle of wine in Boston quickly spiraled into Divas Uncorked, an annual wine and food festival on Martha’s Vineyard.

Each year the group packs a weekend full of wine tasting, food and speakers. This year, its fifth on the island, will take place from Thursday, Aug. 11 to Sunday, Aug. 14.

“We schedule different events on different nights, and try to make them with different price points,” festival organizer Karen Ward said. “We always have a complimentary event at , usually a book signing, and this year we’re going to have a seminar on ‘Minding your Wine’ manners that is also complimentary.”

Divas Uncorked is also trying something new this year.

“We’re calling it our 'Wine and Dine Island Dinner Party,'” Ward said. “After our VIP reception we give people the option of going to two restaurants: paired with French wines, and the Rooftop , where we will be serving South African wine.”

“The idea is to get a small group of people together and go off and have more of an intimate wine dinner and interact with others,” said Ward.

On average, the annual Divas Uncorked Wine and Food festival sees around 1,000 attendees each year.

“There are all different styles and it appeals to everyone,” Ward said. “From the beginning we said we wanted to move it around the Island. We have it in Oak Bluffs, Edgartown and Menemsha, because we want all parts of the Island to be exposed.”
