Chappy Ferry Makes Quick Round-Trip to Vineyard Haven

Long lines of Chappaquiddick Ferry passengers were unhappy that only one ferry was in service Tuesday, so On Time III is returning to service until after the Derby, the Vineyard Gazette reports.

Did you spot the On Time III on its way to the boatyard in Vineyard Haven Monday? Several Facebook users commented on the unusual sight of this ferry, which usually travels no further than the 527-foot distance between Edgartown's Memorial Wharf and Chappy Point, cruising through open water on its way to be hauled for scheduled maintenance.

It turned out to be a short visit: By Wednesday, according to the Vineyard Gazette, the ferry was back in the water and returning to Edgartown, where long lines of waiting passengers had stacked up as a single ferry plied the Chappaquiddick run.

The On Time III had its bottom cleaned, but the rest of its maintenance will have to wait until after the Derby, the Gazette reports.
