Camp Jabberwocky Celebrates 60th Jubilee

July 16 at the Oak Bluffs Tabernacle, join the Vineyard Sound, Alan Dershowitz and other Island celebrities in a salute to the Martha's Vineyard Cerebral Palsy Camp on its 60th anniversary.

One of the best-loved entries — and frequent award winners — in each year's Edgartown Fourth of July Parade is Camp Jabberwocky, the special-needs summer camp founded six decades ago in an Oak Bluffs Campground cottage.

Walking, in wheelchairs or riding the painted Jabberwocky bus, the campers are always cheered by the crowds as they pass by or pause to dance and sing.

But the Independence Day parade is just one day in the lively Vineyard sojourn of the Jabberwocky campers, as described at campjabberwocky.org:

The campers at M.V. Cerebral Palsy Camp (Camp Jabberwocky) sail on private boats, fish with local fishermen and anglers, cookout and drum on the beach, attend parties to watch the sun set and concerts at the Tabernacle. They ride horses and jet skis, all with the help and contributions of the Island.

The camp, which long ago outgrew its cottage, is celebrating its 60th anniversary July 16 with a "Jubilee" at the Oak Bluffs Tabernacle. According to the website, scheduled performers include:

  • Chad Stokes of Dispatch and State Radio
  • Pianist David Crohan
  • The Vineyard Sound
  • Rick Bausman & The Drum Workshop
  • Alan Dershowitz and Friends
  • And several of your favorite Jabberwockians
Tickets to the jubilee are priced at $20 for adults and $5 for children under 12, with a $2.95 online service fee.

But "No one is excluded. Jobs to help if you cannot afford to pay," according to the ticket website for the event.
