Winter Weather, Holiday Matinees

Five things to do and know on the Island this Tuesday, Dec. 17, 2013.

1. The National Weather Service has a winter weather advisory in effect today for just about every Massachusetts county except Barnstable and Dukes. Will we be magically excluded from the latest predicted snow, sleet and rain? Unlikely.

2. Daily, from Dec. 17 to Dec. 20, the Oak Bluffs Library will show a holiday matinee movie at 1:30pm. The movies are White Christmas (Tuesday Dec 17), Love Actually (Wednesday Dec 18), Holiday Inn (Thursday Dec. 19) and Elf (Friday Dec. 20). Free, of course.

3. Did you know that Patch also has a national 5 Things to Know Today feature?

4. Have you entered the Martha's Vineyard Fish Farm for Haiti Project's ongoing Haiti Holiday Raffle? The six prizes include a 30" x 40" oil painting by Vineyard artist Mark Zealander, a Black Dog tall ship sunset cruise for two, 100 gallons of fuel from Vineyard Propane, a $75 gift certificate from Jim's Package Store, a handcrafted necklace by Karen English and a "stash" of Chilmark chocolates. Tickets are $5 each or $40 for a book of 12 at www.fishfarmhaiti.org and select local stores; the drawing is Dec. 24.

5. Now celebrating its third year in its permanent spaceAlex's Place at the Y is open to teens Monday through Thursday from 2:30 p.m. to 6 p.m. Friday from 2:30 p.m. to 10 p.m. and Saturday from 4 p.m. to 10 p.m. Free.
