Five things to do and know on the Vineyard this Wednesday, Jan. 8, 2014.

1. Wednesday's weather will be bright but cold: The National Weather Service forecasts sunny skies, a daytime high of 25 and a wind chill as low as -4.

2. Early risers

3. Mom, Dad: The Wednesday Open Playgroup at the Martha's Vineyard Community Services Family Center runs from 10 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. at 100 Edgartown Road, Oak Bluffs. More info: 508 693-7900 x283 or

4. Comedy tonight: The Martha's Vineyard Film Center posts on Facebook: "When Chaplin, Keaton, and Chase (who was Charley Chase?) ruled the Silver Screen around the world. This Wednesday night we're offering 5 slapstick comedy shorts (each about 20 mins long) from 1916-18 period." Get time and ticket info at mvfilmsociety.com.

5. Get a lift: Are you an Islander 55 or older who needs to get to medical appointments on Cape Cod? Pay what you can to use the Medical Taxi Program: http://www.mvcenter4living.org/offislandmedicaltaxi.html, suggested donations $15-50 depending on distance traveled.
