Smokey Robinson at the Tabernacle, Livingston Taylor at the Whaling Church

Here are five things to do on Martha's Vineyard this Thursday, Aug. 22, 2013 — including rocketry, author talks and dueling big-name concerts at historic venues. Decisions, decisions!

  1. Free pick for kids: "Join the rocket man as we launch rockets from our library courtyard. Supah fun!" posts the Vineyard Haven Public Library. Suitable for ages 5 and up. 3:30 p.m, free.
  2. The Chilmark Library's 2013 lecture series concludes at 5 p.m. with Harvard Law Professor Kenneth Mack discussing the book he recently edited: "The New Black: What Has Changed - and What Has Not - with Race in America." Free.
  3. The Federated Church in Edgartown hosts a book talk at 5:30 p.m. with author and Vineyard summer resident Henry Adams discussing
“Tom and Jack: The Intertwined Lives of Thomas Hart Benton and Jackson Pollock.” Presented by the Martha's Vineyard Museum, the event is $8 to museum members and $12 to non-members.
  4. At 6:30 p.m., Motown great Smokey Robinson and opener Angie Stone kick off the On the Vine Music Festival at the Tabernacle in Oak Bluffs. $125-$150. Find the complete schedule at onthevineevents.com.
  5. At 7:30 p.m., Livingston Taylor and surprise special guests play the Old Whaling Church in Edgartown: Tickets are $35-$55 from ticketsmv.com.
