New Woody Allen Movie Opens, Island Playwright Reads, IMPers End Season

Five things to do on Martha's Vineyard this Thursday, Aug. 29, 2013, from birding and kayaks in the morning to Woody Allen's latest film, the last IMP/WIMP improv showcase of the season and a new play reading in the evening.

  1. It's the last morning for "Early Birders" at Felix Neck Wildlife Sanctuary. Free with sanctuary admission, join Felix Neck birders at 8 a.m. for a casual hour-long walk of the sanctuary grounds to look for summertime birds. An easy to moderate (often buggy) stroll.
  2. If you'd rather paddle than stroll, $42 ($32) for members) per boat gets you a 2.5-hour "Kayak Quest" on Sengekontacket Pond where you can take a self-guided tour, learning about the pond and its wildlife as you follow rhyming quest clues to find a hidden quest box. All materials included. Call to reserve a boat: 508-627-4850.
  3. Woody Allen's new film "Blue Jasmine" is a return to drama for the director, who cast Cate Blanchett and Alec Baldwin as its stars. It opens Thursday at the Martha's Vineyard Film Center in Vineyard Haven: $12, members $7.
  4. Thursday is the final night of the season for fresh, family-friendly improv comedy in the air-conditioned cabaret environment of Alex's Place at the YIMPers and WIMP Comedy Improv kicks off at 8 p.m. with up-and-coming youth comics. $11-$15.
  5. At the Vineyard Playhouse in Vineyard Haven, playwright Wallace Bullock — a lifelong Oak Bluffs summer resident and former town lifeguard who survived a heart transplant in 2011 — will read at 8 p.m. from his new play "A Taste of JFK, Malcolm and Adam." $10, at the door.
