Friday Best Bets on the Vineyard

Five things to do on the Island as Labor Day weekend begins.

  1. It's the last Friday of the season for "Seashore Discovery" at Felix Neck Wildlife Sanctuary, where all ages can talk a short walk through the forest to a protected beach and net fish, crabs and other wildlife. $6 members, $9 non-members, children younger than 3 free.
  2. If you'd rather paddle, $42 ($32 for members) per boat gets you a 2.5-hour "Kayak Quest" on Sengekontacket Pond where you can take a self-guided tour, learning about the pond and its wildlife as you follow rhyming quest clues to find a hidden quest box. All materials included. Call to reserve a boat: 508-627-4850.
  3. With the Striped Bass and Bluefish Derby less than a month away, the Martha's Vineyard Museum opens a new exhibition called "One on the Line," tracing the event from its 1946 foundation. 5 p.m.: Free to members, $7 non-members.
  4. The Martha's Vineyard Jazz & Blues Summerfest features mostly female performers, supporting the Breast Cancer Network and The Balm in Gilead. The group Anaisa performs at 7 p.m. at Union Chapel in Oak Bluffs: $30-$35.
  5. At The Yard in Chilmark, DanceTheYard in Performance presents An evening of work directed by Jesse Keller and Alison Manning. 8 p.m., $15-$25.
