Eat to Beat the Winter Blues, Shop and Save at Chicken Alley

Five things to do on the Vineyard this Wednesday, Dec. 11, 2013.

1. Deal of the day: Wednesday's weekly special at Chicken Alley Thrift Shop, 38 Lagoon Pond Rd. in Vineyard Haven, is 50 percent of kitchenware from 8:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. Your purchases support MV Community Services.

2. Bring the family: The Wednesday Open Playgroup at the Martha's Vineyard Community Services Family Center runs from 10 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. at 100 Edgartown Road, Oak Bluffs. More info: 508 693-7900 x283 or mtoole@mvcommunityservices.com.

3. "Beat the winter blues": Join Josh Levy of Vineyard Nutrition as he discusses how to beat the winter blues. The 5:30 p.m. talk is a free community event at the YMCA of Martha's Vineyard, 111R Edgartown-Vineyard Haven Road, Oak Bluffs.

4. "Embrace the darkness, move into the light": Today brings the second of three Contemplative Advent Services at the First Congregational Church of West Tisbury, held Wednesdays at 5:30 p.m. in the Sanctuary. Kim Johnson posts on Patch: "The dates and themes are as follows: December 4 (Longing and Preparing); December 11 (Waiting and Hoping); and December 18 (Healing and Transforming). Please join us as we embrace the darkness and move into the light of Christmas. These services will be simpler and shorter than our Sunday services, with extra time for silence, prayer, and ritual. They will offer a place for the complexity of emotions people feel during the holidays."

5. Join the museum and save: Purchase a gift membership to the Martha’s Vineyard Museum, mvmuseum.org, before Dec. 23 and get $10 off at the Family and higher membership levels. Call Jessica, 508-627-4441 x117 to purchase. Museum members get 10 percent off at the Museum shop in Edgartown or online at mvmuseum.org/shop.php.
