Martha’s Vineyard may be an island, but it’s not a small one—certainly not one easily seen by foot or bike alone, let alone in a matter of hours. The island is comprised of six towns, each sizable and with a unique personality. The best way to see them all? Get in a car, or on a Vineyard Transportation Authority or tour bus, and drive. Patch has mapped out three towns not to be missed that are located at approximately 15-, 30- and 60-minute drives from the main ferry port in Vineyard Haven. Keep your eyes peeled during the ride, as getting there is half the fun. Don’t neglect the other three …

Few places can boast a 153-year-old institution that is still a vital part of the community. Martha’s Vineyard can. Alley’s General Store, established in 1858, is not merely a place to shop for beach-related snacks and tchotckes, but where residents still gather for morning coffee, the latest breaking news in town and to pick up the mail. It’s no wonder President Clinton and President Obama have both visited the store when vacationing on the island. The store had a long, twisting history of ownership before becoming the operation it is today, owned by the Martha's Vineyard Preservation Trust …
Vineyard Haven welcomes a new addition, Polished Day Spa. Open seven days a week, the small spa offers manicures, pedicures, a variety of massages and reflexogoly services, and uses homemade scrubs and essential oils to serve anyone's beauty needs.
Steps away from the bustle of Circuit Avenue, yet virtually hidden from view, lies the heart and soul of Oak Bluff’s origins—a former religious campground. The campground dates back to 1835, when Methodists flocked to the area later christened Wesleyan Grove for a religious retreat. At that point, Oak Bluffs as we know it did not exist; in fact, it was a section of Edgartown. Methodist travelers set up nine tents, each maintained by an off-island parish, for their first meeting. The tents were arranged in a semi-circle surrounding a preacher’s stand made from old boards and driftwood. Nearly …
Cinema Circus at the Chilmark Community Center Every Wednesday through August the Martha's Vineyard Film Festival's Cinema Circus takes over the Chilmark Community Center to present Cinema Circus, an evening of film and big-top merriment. Families can expect the unexpected at the 5 p.m. event. Look for face painters, stilt walkers, fire jugglers, clowns, trapeze artists and more. Kids are called to "the Little Big Top" for a variety show of all sorts of talents led by Ring Master Mac Young. After the circus, guests and performers parade into the theater for an hour of short films from all …
Talk of hidden gems on Martha’s Vineyard is an exercise in subjectivity. There’s so many from which to choose – how to identify just one? Never mind that what’s a secret to some is a well-loved destination of many others. (Take for instance Back Door Donuts.) Yet of all the estimable, possibly objectionable places that can be classified as hidden gems, one – actually, dozens under one banner – rises above the rest. The Martha’s Vineyard Land Bank Commission owns and maintains nearly 3,000 acres of conservation land throughout the island that it makes available to the public for passive …
