About this column:
“Here All Year” is a series where we catch up with a living, breathing, working Islander and talk about what year-round living is like. If you know someone you'd like to see profiled, send us an email.Apple is in! With the advent of iPads, iPods and everything in between, Islanders love just about everything Apple. This is good news for Louis Hall, a high school science teacher at the Charter School, and also the owner of Anything Apple MV. Anything Apple MV services and repairs Mac and PC computers. They also offer installation of wireless networks, build websites, and setup backup solutions for your home and office. As a youth, Hall used to spend his time "fixing" computers - though, if you were to hear his mother tell it, he was more just taking them apart and trying to put them …
Home is where the heart is. For so many people who weren't born here, (and even native Islanders will agree!), Martha's Vineyard has an undeniable call. Travel though you may: far and wide, high and low, the Island always beckons you back home. Kat McCourt and Coral Watkins of Salt Creative MV are among those called back to her scenic shores, verdant forests and rolling sheep pastures. For McCourt and Watkins, coming back to the Island for good, was a no-brainer... and their shared love of all things MV is what inspired them to begin their business partnership here. Salt Creative MV is the…
Belinda Ritchie, The Green Room's year-round General Manager and Buyer, has been a lot of places, but none quite so sweet as our beloved island. Her step-father, a prominent anthropologist, worked for many different universities during the course of her youth. The years of travel resulted in Ritchie going to eleven different schools before finally settling herself here on Martha's Vineyard. Since calling the Island her home, "I've never left," says Ritchie, "and I don't plan on leaving!" Ritchie says she has always loved to shop at The Green Room, and was working at The Black Dog when she was…
The magic of the Island is enough to hold even the most hard to impress traveler spellbound. For many, one summer here is enough enchantment to make you change plans and figure out a way to stay. Stacy Hayden of Beadniks MV is one of those people who simply could not say "goodbye" to the Island, and jumped at the chance to call Martha's Vineyard her year-round home. Over a decade later, Hayden is happy with her choice and now shares with her Island abode with her husband, her son Jack who attends the Charter School, and many pets. "The humans are outnumbered!" Hayden jokes, of their dog, …
As the pinkletinks begin their chant of spring and our migratory bird friends return to wake us up with song, nature's music again descends upon our Island. And yet there's been someone here making music all through the long winter. Meet Will Luckey, Island born and bred. Though he spent many of his younger years touring on the road with sensational artists such as Cat Stevens, Todd Rundgren and Richie Havens, Luckey spent his formative years here on the Island and returned once his rambling days were done, in 1980. With a degree from Berklee College of Music, as well as a strong background…
Sarah York is the store manager of C.B. Stark Jewelers. While she had been in the jewelry retail business since the age of nineteen, she eventually realized that while she loved the industry, she didn't want to work for a large corporation. Looking for a smaller, more intimate work environment, she became the service manager at Guertin Brothers Jewelers, a well-known independent jewelry retailer on the Cape. In 2002, York moved her career here to Martha's Vineyard via C.B. Stark. York continues to further her education with the Gemological Institute of America, where she has earned many …
