Wall Street Financier Arrested for Shoplifting From Island Stores
Hedge fund manager allegedly stole from two Island boutiques before getting arrested on her way off Island
On Thursday, August 30, police arrested Joelle F. O'Reilly-Hyland (also known as Joelle Wyser-Pratte), of Bedford Hills, New York, as she and her family made their way to the 9:30 pm ferry to Woods Hole. The charge - larceny of goods valued at more than $250 and wanton destruction of property according to the Martha’s Vineyard Times.
O’Reilly- Hyland, a hedge fund manager and co-founder of investment firms Ounavarra Capital LLC and Minerva Capital Management Ltd., was “responsible for the theft of an expensive cashmere sweater” from Pandora’s Box in Menemsha and a necklace and an embroidered shirt from the Green Room in Vineyard Haven.
The Times reported that O’Reilly-Hyland was found out when she appeared in the Green Room wearing the sweater she stole from Pandora’s Box. Apparently, Belinda Ritchie, manager of the Green Room, is friends with Carla Felter, manager of Pandora's Box and recognized the sweater as being identical to one she knew had been stolen from Pandora’s Box. While in the Green Room, O'Reilly-Hyland also reportedly stole a shirt and necklace.
“Police learned from store employees that the family planned to leave on the 9:30 pm ferry that evening,” reported the Times.
Chilmark Chief Cioffi, Chilmark Officer Elizabeth Elwell and Tisbury Officer Scott Ogden met the family at the ferry terminal where O’Reilly-Hyland was reportedly still wearing the sweater. O’Reilly-Hyland allegedly admitted to the theft and was taken to the Dukes County Jail and released on $300 bail.
According to the Times, Chief Cioffi witnessed O’Reilly-Hyland’s arraignment on Friday morning however, that arraignment was expunged from the court record. “Chief Cioffi learned that the arraignment had been stricken from the record so that it could be rescheduled to September 24.”
