A talented musician from Detroit, who goes simply by the name Rodriguez, cuts a couple of records in the early '70s. They flop; what's new?

This is new: They become wild successes in, of all places, South Africa, utterly unbeknownst to the artist, who has disappeared without a trace and is presumed dead.

The South Africans believe romantic myths of his demise. But undaunted filmmaker Malik Bendjelloul, seeking the truth about his death, finds more than he bargained for when he uncovers the reclusive artist living modestly, completely unaware of his superstar status thousands of miles away.

Searching for Sugar Man is nominated for an Academy Award for Best Documentary Feature. The awards will be announced Feb. 24.

USA * 2012 * 85 mins. * Documentary * Not rated

This is an amazing film. I would not have believed the story if I had not heard it on the radio and then seen it on the screen.
Also, the MV Film Center was a delightful surprise to me as an Islander returning after years on the West Coast.
It still has that "new-movie-theater" smell, the purple seats are comfy, the screen is clear, the sound was great.
Thank you, MVFC, we will be back.
(Also, thank you Mom for going straight from the ferry to the film with us!)
