The Youth Leadership Summit inspires, educates and empowers young people to take initiative in their lives and on their island.  In this weeklong intensive leadership training youth delegates (ages 14-22) envision their personal, professional, island and planetary goals; and begin creating their 5-year action plans. They begin with a Sustainable Vineyard Tour to learn first-hand about the green projects: sustainable agriculture, building, cultures, energy and environment. Their faculty includes the Institute’s leaders, the Vineyard’s sustainable champions, and seasoned youth leaders from MVYLI and other youth leadership initiatives.

This year there will be a youth delegation from the islands of Hawaii who will share their island’s sustainable development best practices. They work in teams to explore and support professional goals. As their Leave-A-Legacy Project, they create a 2020 Report on Sustainable Development that they will present at the Institute’s annual Walter Cronkite Awards Ceremony on August 2, 2012 at the .

MVYLI’s mission is to train young people to become leaders of their life, their island, and their world. Our year-round program builds on the youth’s goals from the Youth Leadership Summit and provides them leadership development opportunities including Job Shadow Day, College Prep & Field Program and Bioneers-By-the Bay Conference.  MVYLI members serve as representatives on the Governor’s Youth Council and the Cape & Islands Youth Congress, Junior members of the NAACP and interns with Martha’s Vineyard Community Television. We use Dr. King’s message of “Each one, teach one” which creates a multiplier effect for future generations and long-term sustainable development.
