Martha's Vineyard Museum Awards Annual MV Medals

Do you have awards of your own to give?

For the past two years, the has awarded medals to leaders in the community in recognition of their outstanding commitment to preserving the history, arts, and culture of Martha’s Vineyard. This week, the Museum announced the winners for 2011: Marian Halperin, Francine Kelly and S. Bailey Norton Jr.

Marian Halperin began her association with the Martha’s Vineyard Museum in 1973, and since then has been an intregral part of preserving the Island's history, including transcribing the letters of Charles Macreading Vincent, a young man from Edgartown who fought in Civil War. The culmination of her efforts was the publication of "Your Affectionate Son, Charlie Mac" in 2008.

Francine Kelly, former executive director of , is not just an art collector and art dealer, but also an arts supporter. In her role as executive director and under her creative leadership, Featherstone saw an increase in the number of gallery shows, class offerings and collaborations with other Island organizations. She retired after seven years, but continues to share her experience, wisdom and expertise with many other Island arts- and culture-based organizations.

Bailey Norton is a tenth-generation Vineyarder who authored the widely-acclaimed memoir "My Long Journey Home: A Life Worth Living," which chronicles the hardships of making a living on the water.  Norton has a long association with the Martha’s Vineyard Museum, where he served on the board of directors from 1983 to 1996.
